Nkoma SS eyes double rugby glory in Tororo as unbeaten run continues

Hamisi Katumba, head rugby coach at Nkoma Senior Secondary School in Mbale City, is confident of clinching both the boys’ and girls’ 7s rugby trophies this year in Tororo.

Nkoma SS, which made history last year by securing its third consecutive girls' 7s national title at Teso College Aloet, is now aiming to retain the crown at the climax of the 2025 National Ball Games II and Athletics Championship currently underway at St. Peter’s College and Tororo Girls.

Katumba revealed that the team has two crucial games remaining—against PMM and then against last year’s runners-up, Jinja SS, which will determine their championship fate. He noted that Nkoma SS has remained unbeaten across five matches so far, solidifying their dominance in the tournament scheduled from July 10 to 19.

On Wednesday, July 16, Nkoma SS showcased their strength by defeating Kitgum Comprehensive and Kijjabwemi Secondary School, extending their chances of securing a fourth consecutive title.

In the first match, Nkoma beat Kitgum Comprehensive 34–5. Sunday Oriwoth scored two tries and converted twice, Giramia Moreen and Araniti Patricia each added two tries, while Makhonge Mary and Nabwire Christine scored one try apiece.

In the second match, Nkoma SS narrowly edged past Kijjabwemi SS with a 12–7 win. Mukyala Zulaika and Makhonge Mary each scored a try, and Giramia Moreen made one conversion to seal the victory.

Andrew Odhiambo, head coach of Jinja SS’s rugby team, expressed confidence in his squad’s chances of lifting the title this year. He stated that although they missed out last season, they will do everything possible to ensure both trophies remain by the Nile.

The top three teams from the championship will earn the opportunity to represent Uganda in Rugby 7s at the regional tournament to be hosted in Kakamega, Kenya, later this year.
