Ululations, flag-waving, and cheers filled the air as excited communities welcomed cyclists who completed a grueling 600-kilometer journey between Uganda and Rwanda.

The ride, held from June 23 to 28, 2025, aimed to raise awareness and mobilize resources for health interventions across Africa. Organised by AMREF, the event saw participants traverse regions where the organisation runs key programs—including Kabale, Kalangala, and Kisoro—culminating in a symbolic handover ceremony at Coco Beach, Entebbe.

Through their efforts, the cyclists raised €357,713 (approx. sh1.2 billion) to support various initiatives including maternal healthcare and water projects.

Among the standout participants were Dutch couple Arthure Kleipool and Saine van dee Helm, one of the oldest pairs in the event.

“This is our second time cycling in both Uganda and Rwanda. We ride to support teenage mothers and provide maternal healthcare in schools,” Kleipool shared. Helm added, “AMREF’s work resonates with us. They harness local resources to strengthen healthcare—especially for children and mothers.”

Dr. Patrick Kagurusi, AMREF Uganda’s Country Director, highlighted the cyclists’ contribution toward water access in Kalangala, Iganga, and Namayingo, helping keep girls in school and combat maternal mortality.

“I urge all Ugandans to support teenage girls, ensuring they stay in school and have access to essential healthcare,” Kagurusi emphasised.

Joost van Ettro, former Head of Cooperation at the Netherlands Embassy, welcomed the 60 cyclists and commended their commitment to improving the health sector, particularly for adolescent girls.
