Kenya’s long-awaited debut at the CHAN finals ended in triumph as they edged past DR Congo 1-0 in a pulsating Group A encounter in Nairobi to become just the third team to claim victory in their CHAN debut.
Austin Odhiambo scored the only goal of the match in first-half stoppage time, guiding in a pass from David Sakwa to send the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani into celebration.
The visitors had earlier seen a fifth-minute goal disallowed for offside after VAR review, and although they enjoyed more of the ball, they failed to break down a determined Kenyan defence.

Kenya’s goalkeeper Byrne Omondi played a key role, producing a fine save from Heltone Kayembe midway through the second half.
Head coach Benni McCarthy adjusted tactically in the final stages, bringing on fresh legs to protect the lead as the Congolese mounted pressure.
Kenya will next face Angola, while DR Congo look to salvage their campaign against Morocco.
