Uganda Cranes head coach Morley Byekwaso has called on fans to turn up in large numbers at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, for the team’s crucial CHAN 2024 Group C fixture against Guinea on Friday, August 8.
Speaking during a media briefing after the team’s final training session on Thursday morning, Byekwaso acknowledged the disappointment following Uganda’s 3–0 loss to Algeria in their opening match, but emphasized the importance of fan support in helping the team bounce back.
“We do need a lot of support from our fans. We understand the emotions, but that happens in football. I appeal to them to come out and give the boys moral support and motivation,” said Byekwaso.
The coach admitted that the team is under pressure but remains optimistic, noting that tactical adjustments have been made to address the weaknesses exposed in the opening game.
“We’ve worked on the areas that let us down. The players are mentally prepared, and we’re going out for a win,” he added.
Uganda’s defeat to Algeria sparked frustration among fans, with many leaving the stadium before full-time. Byekwaso acknowledged the criticism but urged patience, pointing out that many of the players are still young and learning to handle pressure at this level.
“We conceded quick goals because we lost concentration. We’ve addressed that. I expect the players to stick to our game plan and stay focused,” he said.
Byekwaso also confirmed that striker Emmanuel Anyama and midfielder Marvin Youngman will miss the Guinea match due to injury.
Guinea, who won their opener against Niger 1–0, will be looking to secure a second victory and move closer to the knockout stage. Their head coach, Souleyman Camara, expressed respect for Uganda but stated his ambition to score more goals and progress in the tournament.
Uganda Cranes defender Rogers Torach, speaking on behalf of the players, echoed the coach’s appeal.
“We know we lost the first game, but we’re ready to overcome Guinea. The boys are focused, and we’re going to push hard for a win,” Torach said.
Kickoff for Uganda vs Guinea is scheduled for 8 PM local time at Mandela National Stadium. The match is a must-win for the Cranes, who currently sit at the bottom of Group C.
