Lieutenant General Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, has called on Ugandan youth to recognize the value of sports, both as a national asset and a personal opportunity.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the closing ceremony of the second edition of the Millennium Football Tournament held at Kaler Primary School in Mukura Town Council, Ngora District, Okiding encouraged young people to pursue sports as a meaningful path rather than engage in destructive activities.
“Uganda is increasingly being recognised as a sports nation on the global stage, in football, athletics, rugby, netball, cricket, rowing, and volleyball. But that recognition can only continue if you, the youth, actively take part,” he said.
Reflecting on his own youthful experiences in sports, Okiding credited his athletic background for helping shape his journey to leadership.
“I encourage you to take football seriously, as a profession and a source of employment that deserves respect,” he added.
The tournament, which ran from May 4 to August 31, 2025, featured 24 registered teams.
Agirigiroi Future Stars FC emerged champions after defeating Akubui United FC 2–0 in the final. The goals were scored by Simon Olupot and Julius Ekiru in the 32nd and 68th minutes respectively.
Tournament coordinator Daniel Apieun emphasized the event’s role in promoting unity and channeling youth energy into constructive pursuits. “The idea behind this tournament is to create an avenue for unity among youth and to identify talent that can be nurtured into careers,” he said.
Jacinta Ayoo, Deputy RDC of Ngora, commended the players for their discipline and urged young people to view football as a life-changing opportunity. She also encouraged continued support for the NRM government, noting its efforts in promoting sports and youth development.
The tournament’s top teams were rewarded for their efforts. The champions received a cash prize of Shs1 million, while the runners-up were awarded a football. Okunguro FC, who finished third, took home Shs700,000. Doyoro Super, in fourth place, received Shs100,000 and medals.
