The National Novice Boxing Championship, running from September 1–6 at Lugogo Outdoor Arena, has entered its decisive phase with Lukanga Boxing Club firmly in the lead as they chase a record fourth consecutive title.
The Najjanankumbi-based powerhouse has dominated the opening three days of the tournament, showcasing depth, discipline, and determination.
With a record 847 boxers from 76 clubs across Uganda trading blows, hooks, and jabs, Lukanga’s commanding start leaves little doubt about their title ambitions.
Lukanga fielded the largest contingent, 86 boxers, both male and female, across various weight categories. Impressively, 58 of them have already punched their way into the quarterfinals, the highest number from any single club this year.
Their closest rivals, COBAP Boxing Club, trail in second place with 48 boxers, 32 of whom have reached the quarters. Traditional giants such as UPDF BC, KCCA BC, Police BC, East Coast, and Namungoona BC have struggled to keep pace, making this year’s title race a two-horse affair between Lukanga and COBAP.
Newcomers like Kalerwe Bogati BC and Fighting Fit BC, owned by 2006 Commonwealth flyweight bronze medalist Martin Mubiru ‘Colio’ have entertained fans with flashes of emerging talent but remain outside the top contenders.
Lukanga head coach Twaibu Mayanja is confident his side will retain the crown. “This year’s National Novice Championship looks to be the easiest for us to win. Only COBAP has come close to matching our quality and depth,” he told Vision Sport. “Our early preparation, unmatched squad depth, and overall quality give us a clear edge.”
Among Lukanga’s standout performers are middleweight Murushid Jjuuko, flyweight Abdallah Busuulwa, bantamweight Murushid Busingye, featherweight Herbert Ssali, and welterweight Rajan Muhammed, all of whom cruised into the quarterfinals.
Awaiting them are COBAP’s top contenders: bantamweight Samuel Ssebagala, welterweight Marvin Mugerwa, lightweight Hakim Kasolo, and middleweight Ukasha Kyagulanyi—each eager to challenge Lukanga’s dominance.
Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) organizing secretary Michelle Nkazzi praised the level of competition, noting that this year’s championship has pushed the traditional heavyweights while giving new clubs a platform to shine.
With the finals set for Saturday, all eyes are on whether Lukanga can fend off COBAP and retain their national crown once again.
