2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Group G
Friday
Uganda 4 Mozambique 0

Rogers Mato and Allan Okello delivered standout performances as Uganda Cranes cruised to a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday night at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The win lifted Uganda to second place in Group G.

After a frustrating first half in which he squandered several chances, Mato redeemed himself with a brilliant second-half display, netting twice in the 70th and 84th minutes.

Uganda had taken the lead just after the restart when Okello opened the scoring in the 49th minute with a stunning left-footed strike from distance, capitalising on a clever assist from Jude Ssemugabi. The goal was no surprise, as Okello had already tested the Mozambican defence with dangerous free kicks in the opening half.

Okello continued to inspire the attack, turning provider in the 83rd minute when he set up Mato for his second goal, before registering another assist a few minutes later. His perfectly delivered corner kick was nodded home by Elio Capradossi in the 90th minute to seal a deserved 4–0 victory.

Despite the emphatic win, Uganda could have scored more had Ssemugabi and Steven Mukwala converted their chances.

The result leaves Uganda second in Group G with 12 points, six behind leaders Algeria on 18. Mozambique slipped to third, level on 12 points but behind on goal difference, while Guinea sit fourth with 10 points. Botswana follow with nine, and Somalia remain bottom with just one point.

Only the group winner will qualify automatically for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Cranes will be back in action on Monday when they host Somalia at Namboole.
