Barely three weeks after clinching the boys’ football title at the East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Kakamega, Kenya, Bukedea Comprehensive School (BCS) is already charting new territory.

School administrators have announced plans to develop a competitive swimming program for next year’s games.

“Winning accolades in football, netball, and volleyball at local, national, and international levels is no small feat,” said Prof. Jonas Gumisirisa, managing director of BCS. “We give thanks for these achievements, and now we see swimming as another fertile ground for our talent to flourish.”

To kickstart the initiative, BCS has enlisted coach Joshua Kutosi to lead twice-daily training sessions. Under his guidance, students are mastering core techniques—from stroke efficiency and speed to stamina building, as well as fundamental skills like body positioning, balance, kicking, pulling, breathing, and rotation.

“With Coach Kutosi on board, we believe we can challenge Seroma Christian High School, the reigning powerhouse in secondary school swimming,” Gumisirisa added. At the recent USSSA National Swimming Championship, Seroma dominated both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

BCS’s ambition builds on Uganda’s overall success at the FEASSA Games, where their national swimming team claimed a fourth straight title at St. Peter’s Junior and Primary School in Mumias.

Uganda topped both the boys’ (473.5 points) and girls’ (451 points) standings, earning 27 gold, 16 silver, and nine bronze medals across 36 events. Hosts Kenya finished second with 406.5 points in the boys’ category and mirrored Uganda’s girls’ total, while Burundi managed two gold, one silver, and five bronze.

As BCS taps into a new sport and harnesses its rising stars, the school hopes to carry forward its winning momentum—and perhaps make a splash on the regional swimming stage next year.
