The 2025 National Rally Championship (NRC) shifts into high gear this weekend as the battle for the title roars into Gulu District for the season’s penultimate round.

With only two events remaining, Uganda’s top drivers are primed for a high-stakes showdown that could define the year’s motorsport narrative.

The championship table tells a compelling story,  one of legendary experience clashing with the rise of new talent.

Leading the pack is Ronald Sebuguzi, a 25-year veteran who tops the standings with 241 points. Just six points behind is his long-time rival Ponsiano Lwakataka, a stalwart of the sport for 27 years, sitting second with 235 points. Their enduring rivalry sets the stage for a classic finale.

Adding a fresh twist to the title race is Musa Ssegaabwe, the breakout performer of the season. In only his third year behind the wheel, the 27-year-old has stunned the rally fraternity by climbing to third place with 207.5 points. Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 9 alongside navigator Mathias Kiyegga, Ssegaabwe’s rapid rise has challenged the status quo.

“I’m here to enjoy the moment. Reaching third in my debut season is more than I hoped for,  it’s incredibly fulfilling,” said Musa Ssegaabwe.

His impressive performances have already fueled plans to upgrade to a Skoda Fabia N5 next season, signaling even greater ambitions ahead.

This weekend’s Gulu rally will also carry a solemn note as the motorsport community pays tribute to the late Rajiv Ruparelia, a former rally driver and patron of the Central Motor Club (CMC), who tragically lost his life in a car crash in May. The event will serve as a celebration of his passion and contribution to Ugandan rallying.

With the championship still wide open, all eyes turn to Gulu. Will the veterans tighten their grip on the crown — or will the rookie sensation close the gap and rewrite the script? One thing is certain: the 2025 NRC is headed for a thrilling finish.
