Lubega, Nalumansi top the City Tyres East Africa Badminton Championship

Lubega beat Reagan Micheal Nsubuga 2-0 to win the men’s singles before he teamed up with Rajab Shamsa Mbiira to claim another victory over Calvin Simiyu/Britney Misoy, 2-1.

Muzar Lubega was one of the biggest winners as the eighth edition of the City Tyres East African Badminton Championship ended at Lugogo on Sunday.


Lubega beat Reagan Micheal Nsubuga 2-0 to win the men’s singles before he teamed up with Rajab Shamsa Mbiira to claim another victory over Calvin Simiyu/Britney Misoy, 2-1.


In a highly charged final Lubega took the first set 24-22 before he completed the victory with a 21-14 sets win to claim the sh1m cash prize and an extra sh800,000/- with his partner.


Earlier, he had eliminated Edwin Waitathu in straight sets (21-6, 21-11) in the semifinals, Denis Onyango in the quarters and James Onyango in the Round of 16.

On his part Nsubuga beat Jordan Leonard Abo 2-0 in the Round of 16, edged Alex Babu 2-1, before he saw-off Edwin Akwanyi 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) to take home sh700,000/-.


CFK Badminton’s Kulthum Nalumansi also pocketed sh1m after she won the women singles against Meble Namakoye 2-1 (21-11, 21-10) following earlier wins against Rajab Natasha, Zainab Wesonga, and Brenda Awori. The different winners in the mixed doubles, women’s doubles in the semis and final categories shared out sh11m.


Mbogo High School, Trisha Kyuuka partnered with Bayat Nandagire to secure victory in the girls' doubles competition, defeating Rebecca Ijuka and Claire Namirembe from Kakungulu Memorial School. Meanwhile, another Mbogo duo consisting of Adams Asania and Mariam Namutebi, along with CFK's Divine Mwesigwa and Malik Juma Zainab, earned bronze medals in their respective matches.


In the Women's Doubles division of the Asian nationals, Sruthi Reddy and Sunaina Reddy claimed the top position, surpassing Raji Gudeti and Rashmi Kori, while Annie Sharmila Pink and Shwetha Hirani secured third place. The Asian national’s competition for participants over 45 years old saw Biju Thomas and Naveen Krishnan emerge victorious, followed by Jahabar Sathick and Kareemul Gani in second place, with Kesavan Rajesh and Venkatesh Kumar rounding out the top three.


Notable performers in the 20-45 years age group featured Mohamed Nowfal and Nazeem Nowfal leading the field, followed by Ajesh Sasi and Trinadh Vinnakota, as well as the pairs of Sameer Mohammed and Sherry Alan Fintan, and Maria Johnson and Mohamed Thariq.
