Isaac Byaruhanga was the match-winner as Makerere University edged Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) 1-0 on Tuesday at Makerere Arena to record their first victory in this season’s Pepsi University Football League (UFL).
The powerful forward rose highest in the 57th minute to nod home a precise corner from Ian Kajubi, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans. It was a deserved breakthrough after Makerere improved significantly in the second half following a sluggish opening period.
IUIU had dominated the first half, creating several chances through Calvin Otim, Shafik Kawooya and Ronald Mulengeti, but poor finishing and the sharp reflexes of Makerere goalkeeper Timothy Kaziba kept the scores level at the break.
After the restart, Makerere took control, and Byaruhanga’s header proved decisive. Despite late pressure from IUIU, Makerere’s defence, led by Kelly Murungi and Frank Mutekanga, stood firm to register the win.
The result lifted Makerere to three points, reviving their hopes of progressing from Group E after an opening-day 1-0 loss to Kumi University. IUIU, who had earlier beaten King Ceasor University 3-0, suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
“We did not play well in the first half, but the coach told us to be more aggressive, and that made the difference,” said Byaruhanga. “Our next opponents should be ready because Makerere is back.”
IUIU’s Faraj Mugambe admitted frustration, saying, “We were the better side but failed to take our chances. We will regroup and bounce back.”
Action continues on Wednesday with International University of East Africa (IUEA) hosting Muteesa I Royal University in Kansanga.
