KAMPALA - The Uganda Police Force on Monday morning raided Friends Bar in Nakasero, Central Division Kampala and arrested 15 people who were drinking alcohol during day time without observing social distancing.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango noted that the operation was carried out at midday.

"We were tipped by concerned citizens and raided the bar. Others who were drinking fled the scene. Those arrested have been detained at Central Police Station in Kampala on charges of doing acts that are likely to cause the spread of infectious disease." Onyango said.

The raid comes two days after police raided La Venti Lounge and Kitchen in Najjera, a Kampala suburb at around 11:00 pm and arrested 22 revellers accused of flouting anti-coronavirus guidelines of drinking in bars.

The suspects were rounded up after they streamed live videos on Facebook showing dozens of people drinking at the bar. They were dancing and shouting that they are not aware of COVID-19 while others said the night-time curfew doesn't affect their happiness.

In March this year, President Yoweri Museveni closed down bars and churches as one of the measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. Last week Museveni extended the curfew hours from 7 pm - 6.30 am to 9 pm - 5:30 am. He insisted that bars, clubs, discos, churches and mosques will remain closed until further notice.
