MP Mwijukye attacked over land in Buhweju

Mwijukye was attacked by a group of land grabbers wielding machetes, sticks, and stones before he was hit on the head by stones that left him injured.

BUHWEJU - Buhweju County Member of Parliament (MP) Francis Mwijukye is nursing wounds he sustained in a scuffle over land.

The Sunday, May 12, 2024, attack happened in Rwanyambare village, Nyakishana sub-county in Buhweju district when Mwijukye was addressing Christians of Rwanyamabare Catholic Church who have been accusing their neighbour Edwin Burimbare of grabbing their land.

According to Buhweju district LC5 chairperson Deo Atuhaire, Mwijukye was attacked by a group of land grabbers wielding machetes, sticks, and stones before he was hit on the head by stones that left him injured.

During the scuffle, seven people including a Vision Group journalist attached to TV West, Juliet Kyarisiima (Pictured), were injured.

"The Police evacuated him and he is now admitted to one of the hospitals in Mbarara city," Atuhaire posted on a WhatsApp forum.

Kyarisima told New Vision Online via the phone that her gadgets including a camera and a laptop were all destroyed. 

Police were yet to issue a statement regarding the attack by press time.
