KAMPALA - The Traffic Police have revealed the hours when most fatal accidents are likely to happen on Ugandan roads.

They said in their latest report that a comparison of fatal crashes for Kampala Metropolitan and the rest of the country revealed that the highest number of crashes in 2023 were reported between 6:00 pm and 7:59 pm.

“However, there was a drastic drop in the number of fatal crashes reported after 8:00 pm, unlike Kampala Metropolitan where the reduction was gradual. The findings suggest a need for enhanced enforcement between 4:00 pm and midnight,” the report said.

It also said that 62% of all crashes occurred during the daytime (7:00 am to 6:59 pm) and that the highest number of accidents (3,681) was recorded between 6:00 pm and 7:59  pm.

The lowest number of crashes was recorded between 12:00 am and 1:59 am.  The report also said the month of December had the highest number of crashes and these were 2,131while January had the lowest at 1,787.

July had the highest number of fatalities (457), while November registered the lowest number at 332.

This report is an annual publication compiled by the Uganda Police Force, providing the statistical summary of road traffic crashes reported from January 1 to December 31, 2023.

It also indicated that 4,806 lives were in road crashes in 2023, up from 4,534 deaths recorded in the previous year.

The statistics also showed that the majority of road crashes involve motorcycle riders and their passengers which accounted for 45% of the total number of fatalities recorded in 2023.

Pedestrians accounted for 37% (1,795) of deaths in 2023, vehicle occupants 15 % (737), while pedal cyclists accounted for 3% (140) of all fatalities.
