How to maximise your laundry room

In Uganda, washing of clothes is mostly done by hand. However, more and more people are adopting machine-washing trends and installing laundry rooms in their homes.

According to construction experts, a typical laundry room has a washing machine, dryer, and sink. This is different from a utility room, which is often found in the basement of a home, or other out-of-the-way places. Laundry rooms are usually found on the main level of the home, or near the bathroom. Bernadette Muchunguzi, is a creative homeowner who transformed her idle store into a laundry room.

However, she later realised that it had some idle space which she could put to more functional use.

“I thought of adding an ironing board so as to add ironing to the washing. That meant that I would have to add shelves for storage. My husband suggested that we could turn the extra space into a pantry, but it would have been a distance away from the kitchen. My first inclination was to turn it into an ironing room, which I felt would work for me,” she says.

Muchunguzi went ahead to implement her plan that worked superbly. Maria Kiwagama, of Amari Interiors and Décor in Naguru says if you have a laundry room, you can maximise it to perform multiple functions and make the best out of it.

“You just have to implement your ideas professionally. Adding an ironing area to a laundry room is a wise decision, because after running the laundry in the machine, it is taken out to dry. Thereafter, from the line, the clothes can be put back in the laundry room for ironing before they are organised in the wardrobe. This arrangement will help you organise your clothes and the bedrooms.  However, instead of using an ironing board, opt for a table with drawers. You can use its top for ironing and drawers for storage,” Kiwagama says.
