It is now 60 years since the Cathedral was built by the White Fathers.
This year (2024) Catholics in Uganda and elsewhere in the world are commemorating the diamond jubilee of the canonisation of the Uganda Martyrs.
Mathias Mulumba, Charles Lwanga and their 20 companions were announced as Saints of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Paul VI during a colourful ceremony at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on October 18, 1964.
The event was indeed great and unprecedented. And for that matter, the local Church leaders opted to put in place concrete monuments to help posterity remember the event.

One of the monuments that were erected is the architectural wonder Cathedral of Kiyinda-Mityana, which interestingly is also the place of martyrdom of one of the martyrs, Noah Mawaggali.
It is now 60 years since the Cathedral was built by the White Fathers, the wonderful missionaries of sweet memories. The Cathedral’s diamond jubilee celebrations will take place at the cathedral in Kiyinda-Mityana on July 28 (2024).
But as the Christians in Kiyinda-Mityana prepare themselves for this great celebration, they also have the uphill task of renovating the Cathedral, which after six decades, has developed serious architectural problems.
The cathedral’s affiliate presbytery and parish hall also require urgent renovation.
