KAMPALA - Today, Friday (September 5, 2025), is the third and last day of the nomination exercise of several aspirants seeking to take up positions at districts and cities.

The nomination exercise that kicked off on Wednesday (September 3, 2025) has climaxed, and among those who were nominated on the last day of the exercise is Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who has held the same seat for the last 15 years.

Lukwago, of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), will battle it out with his main rival of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Ronald Balimwezo, who is currently the Nakawa East Legislator.

Other nominated candidates for the same seat are Beatrice Mao, the wife of the justice minister and Democratic Party (DP) president general Norbert Mao, Forum for Democratic Change's (FDC) Ibrahim Kasozi, National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Moses Kizito Nsubuga and former Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Sempala, as an Independent candidate, among others.

The group was all nominated by Kampala Electoral Commission (EC) regional returning officer, Rashid Hasakya.

After today’s exercise, the Electoral Commission will resume the country-wide nominations next week, on September 8-10, for municipality and city division councils. Sub-county, town, and municipal division council nominations will follow on September 11-24.

For parliamentary elections, the nomination period was shifted from mid-September to October 15 and 16, 2025, and these will be conducted at the respective district or city returning offices. 

Presidential candidates have been picking forms since August 11. The nomination will be on September 23-24. Parliamentary candidates will be nominated on October 16-17. Presidential and parliamentary campaigns start on October 4 and end on January 12.
