Fourteen is the number of para-athletes Uganda is poised to send to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Speaking to New Vision exclusively, the Uganda Paralympic Committee General Secretary, Innocent Tumwesigye said arrangements were on track.

This will be the record-high number and Tumwesigye expects more medals from the para-athletes this season.

“We have received a lot of interest from across the country and we are giving everyone a chance to prove that they deserve to be in Birmingham. These are athletes who are able to do things differently and we strongly believe that they will do well in their trials and win medals for the country they so much love,” Tumwesigye stated.

In 2021 during the Paralympic Tokyo, David Emong won a bronze for Uganda in athletics.

The notable sports disciplines para-sportsmen and women will take to the field in England in July include table tennis, para-power lifting, athletics, and swimming.

To qualify, para-power lifting and table tennis players will travel to Birmingham on April 16 -26 to qualify.

Those vying to participate in athletics will travel to South Africa for qualifications in April as well.

While the 14-year-old starlet Husnah Kukundakwe is already in Italy where she is edging closer to her Commonwealth Games debut.

Ultimately, it will be mesmerising to see what Uganda’s para-sports fraternity can manage to engineer at the global stage.
