Thomas and Uber Cup Finals:

Women:

South Africa 3 - Uganda 2

Semifinal:

Uganda 3 - Algeria 0

South Africa 3 – Nigeria 2

Uganda has settled for a silver medal in the Thomas and Uber Cup Africa Senior Badminton Championships in Egypt – Cairo.

The players stood their ground to retain the silverware they won at home in 2022 when Uganda hosted the event at Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The gallant team of four ladies was humbled by South Africa in a high- tension encounter that saw the them level 2-2 .

South Africans edged Uganda 3-2 after a small margin loss by the junior player on the team  named Fadilah Shamika.

In the final, the team captain Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi delivered their best to win the singles despite losing the double encounter against more composed South Africans.

In the men's category, the Ugandans were again ejected in the quarterfinal where Algeria and Nigeria played in the final.

“I salute our players for the good performance to steer into the finals. South Africa has very solid double event players and when we lost in the last single, I knew it was really going to be hard for Uganda to come back.

We shift our focus on individual matches that follow,” noted the CEO for Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), Simon Mugabi.

Uganda was represented by the men and women teams in the bi-annual tournament.

The men did not win any game and finished last in the group stages.

Both men and women will be playing in the individual events  and then on Sunday , the finals will be played.
