Uganda female badminton players narrowly missed a gold medal at the Africa Senior Thomas and Uber championships in Egypt after losing to South Africa 2-3 in a heartbreaking final.

The team settled for a silver medal that they also won in 2022 when the event was hosted in Kampala.

The players were hungrier for medals in the individual events where Shamika Fadilah Rafi also settled for a silver medal after beating teammate Gladys Mbabazi in the semifinal.

But Fadilah’s chase for the gold was cut short due to an injury she picked in the semifinal encounter against Mbabazi.

Scholtz also beat Fadilah in the team events for the gold medal to slip away from their hands.

She, however, bagged 2,500 tournament points to strengthen her chances of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics as Mbabazi got 1,000 for the bronze.

Team captains Husina Kobugabe and Tracy Naluwooza lost in the first round of the single event.
