The 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens kicked off today at the University of Ghana Rugby Grounds in Accra, Ghana.
Uganda’s team, the Lady Rugby Cranes Sevens, overcame jet lag to start the tournament with a huge 48-0 victory against Côte d’Ivoire.
Uganda ensured the first half ended 22-0 with tries from Mayimuna Nassozi, Lydia Namabiro, Unity Namulala, and Peace Lekuru. Tina Apio converted one.
The second half was equally dominant for Uganda, adding 24 more points. Peace Lekuru, Lydia Namabiro, and Grace Auma scored tries. A penalty try and two conversions from Tina Apio and Mayimuna Nassozi secured Uganda’s 48-0 win against the West Africans.
This result is exactly what the Nile Special-sponsored Lady Rugby Cranes Sevens coach, Charles Onen, wanted.
“The result is all we wanted to start with; however, we have to do some polishing before the next game,” Onen said.
Uganda’s next game in Group C is against Senegal at 3:06 PM, followed by a match against Zambia at 6:12 PM in the last game of the group.
