Uganda Cranes defender Arnold Odong has remained optimistic despite the team’s 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their CHAN 2024 opener at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on Monday, August 4.
Odong admitted that the result was disappointing.
"It was really a big game for us. We didn’t get the result we wanted. As you know, it’s a tournament and we still have other games to play," he said.
Uganda fell behind after Ayoub Ghezala punished a defensive error in the first half, before second-half goals from Meziane Abderrahmane and Soufine Beyazid sealed Algeria’s victory.
The Cranes, struggled with Algeria’s pace and pressure.
Adong, who started in defence, did not shy away from acknowledging the team’s flaws.
"We conceded three goals and I cannot brag about that. What I can say is we need to improve on the poor areas and come back stronger as a team," he explained.
Despite the loss, he praised the home fans for turning up in large numbers and promised a better performance in the next match.
"I thank all fans who came at Namboole. We know this is not the result you needed, but please trust in us we will bounce back," Adong concluded.
Uganda now sits at the bottom of Group C, behind Algeria, Guinea, and Niger.
The Cranes will be looking to revive their campaign when they face Guinea on Friday, August 8.
Guinea beat Niger in their opening match and will be a tough test for a Uganda side desperate for points.
