Kampala Bridge Club 1 claims historic national title in Makerere

The seasoned Kampala Bridge Club achieved a truly impressive and well-deserved victory, which will undoubtedly be remembered in Uganda's history of mind sports.

They clinched the National Bridge League 2025 championship with a total of 267 Victory Points (VPs), just edging out Ndejje Mavericks-1, who finished with 259 VPs at Makerere University on Saturday.

The Kabira Country Club's team, comprised primarily of senior citizens and making their league debut, triumphed in a nail-biting championship, finishing ahead of Kampala Bridge Club-2, who secured third place with 250 VPs.

The four-round, 48-board competition concluded with Kampala BC-1 and Kampala BC-2 remaining undefeated, their victory attributed to decades of defensive skill and accurate slamming.

Ndejje Mavericks-1 experienced a setback in the Ndejje Derby, losing 16–12 VPs. This 4-VP deficit proved costly, preventing them from securing the championship, even though they decisively defeated the reigning champions, MakerereBC-1, with a score of 25–5. Makerere BC-1 ultimately finished in sixth place with 205 VPs, failing to win any of their critical matches throughout the league.

Now that the NBL championship is decided, university bridge clubs are turning their attention to the National University Games (AUUS Games 2025), scheduled for December 2025 at Uganda Christian University. The Ndejje Mavericks, who secured the NBL silver medal, are expected to be strong contenders, but other teams like Victoria BC, Makerere BC, Kampala University BC, Cavendish BC, and IUIU Aces will all be eager to impress.

During the closing ceremony, UBF President Linus Wamanya presented the following awards: the Gold Trophy and Medals went to Kampala Bridge Club 1, Ndejje Mavericks 1 received the silver award, and Kampala Bridge Club 2 was awarded the bronze.

“This is Uganda’s bridge developing and growing bigger and better,” Sixty players from 13 teams is a great achievement for our national league and we look forward to make it more attractive and competitive next year,” Wamanya said.

“We are a national sport now and players should prepare for 2026 to represent Uganda at FISU World Mind Sport Championship and World Youth Bridge championship 2026”.
