Golfers mourn former UGC trustee Dr Aliker

Former Uganda Golf Club (UGC) captain Emmanuel Wamala has described the late Dr Martin Aliker as an amazing man with unmatchable qualities of sincerity, honesty, straightforwardness, dedication, compassion, and above all that great sense of humour.

According to sources, Aliker a golfer and former trustee and life member of the Uganda Golf Club passed on Monday at Nakasero Hospital.

“It is sad to learn about the passing of Dr Aliker. He was such an invaluable member of UGC and those of us who had the opportunity to know him will always remember his total commitment to UGC. He not only served as a Trustee of the club but also used his influence in the various corporates he was associated with to sponsor mega tournaments. He was a great fellow and he will be greatly missed,” Wamala stated.

UGC captain Paul Rukundo described the late as ‘a lion of a man, pillar of the Ugandan economy and a patriot’.

“On behalf of the entire membership of the Uganda Golf Club, I would like to express our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr Martin Aliker. His dedication to the Uganda Golf Club was unwavering. He served not only as Captain but also as a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT), leaving a significant mark on the Club's history,” Rukundo stated.

“We will remember Dr Aliker not only for his golfing prowess but also for his warmth, generosity and sportsmanship. He was a true gentleman of the game and a valued member of our golfing family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr Aliker's family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Aliker who died aged 96 was not only a golfer but a dental surgeon, businessman, and entrepreneur but also held different portfolios in the corporate, education, and politics of Uganda.

He was the Chancellor of Victoria University Uganda, the founding chancellor of Gulu University, and a senior presidential advisor.
