Little was known about when the redevelopment of the Lugogo Sports Complex would start, how much it would cost, and when it would be completed, but the picture has become a lot clearer in recent weeks.

National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Bernard Ogwel in an interview with New Vision Sport, has confirmed that the redevelopment is set to start as early as April.

“The redevelopment of Lugogo is set to commence with the vacating of the premises of all the current users of the place as early as April to give leeway to the contractor to start the process,” Ogwel noted.

National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Bernard Ogwel said redevelopment is set to start as early as April.

National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Bernard Ogwel said redevelopment is set to start as early as April.

He revealed that President Yoweri Museveni endorsed the redevelopment of the facility and then boosted its progress.

“When the President (Yoweri Museveni) showed interest in redeveloping the facility last year, he met with the firm to build the facility (Summa). This showed how much the government is interested in the development of sports facilities,” Ogwel added.

It should be noted that First Lady Janet Museveni two weeks ago received the land title of 0.3185 hectares of Plot 10 Hesketh Bell Road in Kampala (Lugogo).

She received the title from lands ministry permanent secretary Dorcas Okalanyi at State House Nakasero.

The Lugogo Sports Complex’s redevelopment budget is estimated to cost sh790b and will take two years to complete.

Ogwel is confident that once the facility is complete, a lot of revenue will be generated.

“Around sh85b will be collected as revenue annually from the facility upon completion which will be a great source for the government,” reasoned Ogwel.

The new sports complex will comprise two arenas, a swimming pool, an improved hockey pitch, a gym, NCS offices and two hotels.
